Artists are constantly asked to prove the value of work that they have not yet been given the conditions to make. As an artist, I know that the finished track is only the visible part. The research, doubt, rewrites, conversations and emotional labour happen long before anyone presses play.

TIME IS PART OF THE INFRASTRUCTURE

When a grant pays only for an output, artists often subsidise the process themselves. They take other jobs, borrow equipment, use unpaid collaborators or compress months of development into a few exhausted weeks. The work may still appear—but the system has transferred its cost back to the artist.

This matters particularly when music engages with social questions. Responsible work needs time to listen, build trust, challenge assumptions and decide what should—or should not—be made public.

WHY SIX MONTHS

Six months is not a magic number. It is a practical window long enough for an artist to move through research, development, production, reflection and public presentation without pretending creative work follows a straight line. Monthly mentorship creates checkpoints without turning the programme into surveillance.

WHAT THE THB 70,000 GRANT IS MEANT TO DOทุน 70,000 บาทมีหน้าที่อะไร

The direct grant is intended to give each selected fellow room to make decisions around their own project. It is paired with mentorship and access because money without relationships can leave artists isolated, while advice without money asks them to do more unpaid work.

SUCCESS CANNOT BE ONLY A VIEW COUNT

Public reach matters, but it is not the only measure. We should also ask whether the artist developed a stronger practice, built lasting relationships, reached the community the work was made for, gained a credible next opportunity and learned something that can shape future work.

If we want artists to make work that moves society, we have to stop treating the time required to make it as free.
